What is Fertility Intensive Care Medicine?

Fertility intensive care is an evolving medical discipline to treat of the child from the time of creation until implantation is secure. There are two major branches of fertility intensive care.

  • Prenidial Medicine - Caring for babies from creation to implantation.
  • Neonidial Medicine - Caring for implanting babies until implantation is secure.

Nidation is another term for implantation. This is where the "nid" in these new words comes from. Prenidial ("pre-NID-e-al") means "before" the baby has implanted, and the baby is called a prenid ("PRE-nid"). Neonidial ("nee-o-NID-e-al") means the baby is "newly" implanted, and the baby is called a neonid ("NEE-o-nid").

Two auxiliary or "peri" disciplines are also included under the heading of fertility intensive care.

  • Perifertile Medicine - Care centered around fertility events.
  • Perinidial Medicine - Care centered around implantation events.

The prefix "peri-" means around. For example, perinatal medicine is medicine for around the time of birth. The purpose of perifertile medicine is to help parents fulfill the act of procreation. The purpose of perinidial medicine is to help babies implant securely.

Together perifertile medicine, prenidial medicine, perinidial medicine, and neonidial medicine cover the major subjects of fertility intensive care medicine from the perspective of infant health care and creation.

Fertility Intensive Care Unit

A fertility intensive care unit or FICU is an interdisciplinary medical facility being developed to provide fertility intensive care to babies and their families.

Legal Status

As a first trimester procedure involving a woman's reproductive right to establish her pregnancy, fertility intensive care must be performed by a licensed physician and is not subject to other regulation under current U.S. law.

A Message from Ambassador Califorrniaa

Dear Reader,

You probably thought a medical professional was behind this endeavor instead of a diplomat. In 1997 a letter of mine was published in a medical journal calling attention to a crisis concerning the physician-patient relationship in "test tube" baby programs.

Doctors were unsure of whether test tube babies should be treated as patients by physicians or whether they should be treated as somewhat exalted laboratory specimens by people with PhD's. To the journal editor's surprise the letter did not receive much attention.

Frankly, I was very disappointed by the crude forms of care and treatment the children were receiving.

So, since I believe all patients deserve a Patient's Bill of Rights, I simply took it upon myself to change the system. I decided that instead of using crude test tubes and petri dishes we should use medical intensive care units.

Fortunately, engineering advances now make it possible to make these intensive care units a reality. They are in effect a miniaturized version of the incubators used to care for babies in a neonatal intensive care unit.

In 1998 a few mostly academic engineers and scientists recognized the interdisciplinary nature my endeavor, which I called the Micro ICU Project (for micro intensive care unit). But doctors rejected the idea. Without their support, I was left alone.

But I did not let that stop me. Without an engineering or medical degree, I set out to design the incubators myself. I now have two U.S. patents to show for it.

I am developing Koala™ brand incubators for babies before implantation. I am also developing Kanga™ brand incubators for babies awaiting reimplantation. Together Koala™ and Kanga™ brand incubators will provide the medical technology to care for babies in fertility intensive care units.

As you visit this website, I hope you will join me in supporting this amazing technology. With the help of billions of dollars and lots of hard work, together we will realize this dream for patients and families.

Sincerely,

Eurica Califorrniaa
